Navigating Diagnosis
Thinking about diagnosis? Start here!
If you’re considering seeking a diagnosis for a neurodivergent condition, it can feel like a big and sometimes overwhelming step.
Before you begin that process, we strongly recommend reading through this step-by-step guide.
It covers important things to think about, including:
The different types of assessments available
Questions to ask providers before committing
How to involve your GP
What to expect in terms of costs and follow-up
Seeking a diagnosis isn’t just about booking an appointment — it’s about making informed decisions that work for you long-term.
Taking the time to understand the process now can help you avoid unexpected barriers later.
How do I get diagnosed as an adult in the Isle of Man?
At present, there is no NHS pathway for adult diagnosis of any neurodivergent condition on the Isle of Man — including autism, ADHD, dyslexia, or related conditions. This means that adults seeking a formal diagnosis must currently do so through private providers, either by self-referring to a specialist clinic, through a private company, or via health insurance (if your policy covers assessments).
The cost of private assessments can vary significantly, depending on the condition and provider. It’s important to research options carefully and ensure that any clinic you choose offers recognised assessments and post-diagnostic support.
The Isle of Man Government has stated that it is actively working to develop an NHS diagnostic pathway, and we as a charity are advocating strongly for this change to ensure equitable access to diagnosis and support for all adults.
In the meantime, our team is here to help guide you through the private assessment process, from understanding your options to preparing for appointments and accessing follow-up support once you receive your results.
Who can provide private diagnosis for adults locally?
There are currently limited options for local diagnosis, we will update this list as and when new providers become available.

What support is there for me after diagnosis?
Support for neurodivergent adults on the Isle of Man is currently limited, but growing. While there is no formal post-diagnostic support service provided through the NHS at this time, there are a number of ways to find help, connection, and understanding.
Our charity, Isle of Neurodiversity, offers peer-led support groups, social spaces, and advocacy to help you navigate life after diagnosis — whether that means understanding your neurotype, managing daily challenges, or simply connecting with others who share similar experiences.
There are also a number of local and online resources that can be helpful, including:
Manx Care mental health and wellbeing services, for general emotional support and counselling referrals.
Private therapists and coaches on the island and online who specialise in autism, ADHD, or other neurodivergent conditions.
UK-based charities and communities, such as the ADHD Adult UK,National Autistic Society, and Neurodiversity Hub, which offer practical resources and online peer support.
We recognise that getting a diagnosis can bring both relief and uncertainty — it’s a beginning, not an end.
Whether you’re seeking workplace adjustments, exploring therapy options, or simply looking for a safe place to talk, we’re here to help you find the right path and feel less alone on the journey.
