Financial Support for Neurodivergent Persons
If you are neurodivergent and currently unable to work—or working less because of your condition—there are a number of financial supports and benefits you may be able to access through the Isle of Man Government. Below is an overview of what’s available, what to check, and where to apply.
What supports are available?
Income Support: This is a means-tested benefit for people who are on low income or not working, and who meet residence/eligibility criteria.
Learn more: Income Support gov.imIllness & Disabilities benefits: If you have a long-term condition (which may include a neurodivergent condition) that affects your ability to work or manage day-to-day tasks, you may qualify for support under the “Illness and Disabilities” category.
Explore the category: Illness and Disabilities gov.imPurpose-built disability supports: For example, the Disability Living Allowance helps cover extra costs if you have a long-term disability and need help or mobility support.

What to do if you’re neurodivergent and unable to work right now?
Check eligibility: Take note of the benefit’s criteria. Even if you do some work, you may still qualify (for example, working less than a certain number of hours).
Gather details: Note your diagnosis (if you have one), your employment status, how your condition affects your ability to work, and any other support needs.
Apply or enquire: Visit the relevant benefit page (links above) and either apply online or contact the Social Security or Benefits team for guidance.
Ask about workplace adjustments or part-time support: If you’re considering returning to work, ask about disabled-persons accommodations or supported employment schemes.
Keep records: Save copies of applications, benefit decisions, and any correspondence—these are useful if you need to appeal or update your situation.
Important notes & limitations
Having a neurodivergent condition doesn’t automatically guarantee a benefit. Each case is assessed on how the condition affects your daily functioning and work capacity.
Some benefits are means-tested (based on income and savings) while others are not.
Because there is currently no formal shared-care pathway or mandated adult diagnostic service on the island for all neurodivergent conditions, you may need to explain how your condition impacts you rather than rely on a service referral.
